Rembrandt Self-Portrait 1659

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn Rembrandt's self-portrait of 1659 self-portrait is sometimes referred to as "Self-Portrait with Two Circles" due to the two circles visible in the upper left corner of the painting.

Rembrandt painted this during the later years of his career when he was facing financial difficulties and personal challenges. The painting reflects both the artist's skill at presenting the introspection and the sheer power of his handling of light and darkness. COnsidered a profound image is is also considered to be an enigmatic self-portrait.

Rembrandt presents himself in a three-quarter view, looking directly at the viewer with a serious and contemplative expression. He is depicted wearing a beret, a luxurious fur coat, and a large gold chain around his neck, indicating his status as a successful artist.

What sets this self-portrait apart is Rembrandt's use of light and shadow. His face is illuminated while the background is shrouded in darkness, emphasizing the artist's introspection and focusing attention on his expressive eyes and weathered face.

The two circles in the upper left corner are an intriguing aspect of the painting. It is unclear what they represent, and art historians have speculated on their possible meanings. Some suggest that they could symbolize Rembrandt's focus on his own creative process or his exploration of the boundaries of artistic representation. Others propose that they might be references to optical devices used by artists or even serve as a compositional element.

Rembrandt painted numerous self-portraits throughout his career, and each reveals different aspects of his personality and artistic skills. In this particular self-portrait of 1659, Rembrandt captures a sense of maturity, introspection, and technical virtuosity.

Today, the painting is housed in the Kenwood House in London, where it is admired by visitors who appreciate Rembrandt's mastery and the depth of emotion he conveyed through his self-portraits.

John Berger - Ways of Seeing

John Berger's Ways of Seeing is a famous art instruction on seeing art through a new awareness of elements that get overlooked or are somehow obscure for the casual viewer. The book was first published in 1972 and based on the BBC television series. The Sunday Times critic commented: "This is an eye-opener in more ways than one: by concentrating on how we look at paintings . . . he will almost certainly change the way you look at pictures."
