James Montgomery Flagg "Always Faithful, First in the Fight"

Marine Corps Recruitment Poster, 1918

The flip-side of the coin that is a painting like Picasso's Guernica is this recruitment poster by James Montgomery Flagg which advertises the services and credo of the United States Marine Corps, circa 1918. A watercolor poster design (one of dozens made by Flagg during the earlier phase of his career), Flagg's great facility with a brush easily rendered convincing images of soldiers for a poster like this, or advertisements of gentlemen modeling clothing styles of those eras. Flagg is probably most famous since his death in 1960 for his poster "I Want You" featuring an Uncle Sam with a protruding finger pointed toward the viewer.
